Our story in China

ROCKIT GLOBAL LIMITED

Rockit Global Limited (RGL) is a high growth, innovative company based in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, which holds the exclusive rights to grow and distribute the PremA96 miniature apple variety, under the brand name Rockit™ apple.

Rockit™ apples first launched in China in 2014 and are now exported to over 100 cities via our extensive distribution network. Our apples are sold in premium food stores including Olé, City Super, Pagoda, Greenery and many more. Our Asian markets make up almost 80% of our export volumes from New Zealand, with Mainland China being our single largest export market.

Our distribution network continues to grow exponentially as consumers – from kids to families, millennials to retirees, and everyone in between – discover the delicious taste of Rockit™ apples.

We have expanded our global in-market team which has boosted our local consumer knowledge and strengthened relationships with our partners in China.  Consumer purchasing habits have changed markedly in the Covid-19 climate and with a stronger focus on health and food safety, Rockit has been well positioned to meet this sudden consumer trend which seems set to continue. 

Our packaging has been a distinct advantage and our global research has shown that consumers associate our name and brand with excellence in food safety. With a significant increase in online shopping in China, we have also increased our focus in this area and launched our cheeky new brand character Rocki.

China is an important cornerstone of our business, and we look forward to ongoing growth and expansion across the market through continued innovation. Through our in-market team and staying on top of consumer trends, we will look to increase our partnerships with licensees and retailers to continue to build depth to our brand and drive sales. 

As Chinese consumers become increasingly concerned about sustainability, we are also looking to introduce innovative new packaging formats to reduce the impact on the environment. We believe our contemporary and appealing new brand – that has already seen great success in China – will help drive further consumer demand and help us become the world’s most loved apple.

Rockit™ apple

Fully mature but uniquely small, the world’s first miniature apple* also has a delicious, sweet taste, rosy red blush and strong nutritional profile. We put decades of New Zealand innovation into every Rockit™ apple – a natural hybrid of New Zealand’s popular Gala and Gala x Splendour apples, the result of 20 years of careful natural breeding by New Zealand Plant and Food scientists.

While the rest of the world was super-sizing, we did the opposite – thinking differently in a commodity-based category, we created the perfect snack size apple, packed with concentrated flavour and goodness. Then we thought different again, and put them in a tube that’s 100% convenient, and 100% recyclable, delivering a premium product that stands out on shelf.

First exported in 2013, our apples are grown under license agreements in 10 countries. This global licensing model ensures our apples are available fresh all year around. Rockit™ apples are sold in more than 30 territories through a range of channels where healthy food is often not available – such as convenience stores, airports, gyms and vending machines, allowing us to compete in the snack category and offering consumers a healthier choice.

On this basis, the potential sales distribution channels for Rockit™ apples far exceed what a commodity apple can reach, and we are reporting strong results in a challenging global economic climate.
